The man beyond the 42
Greg a man that likes running a long way. A long, long, way. The kind of distance that usually elicits concern in friends and relatives. The madness began in 2007 when, at the ripe young age of 40, he decided to pursue a new hobby as an outlet. No substance abuse, not overweight, just your garden-variety mid-life crisis. It was a small, innocent 1km run to the local park, then 1km back. This quickly evolved into Half Marathons, marathons then Ultra marathons. These days, Greg happily runs 100km+ and has done many times.
big runs beyond the 42
One of Greg's personal favourites is the legendary 240km Coast to Kosciuszko which he has done more than a few times. Starting at Twofold Bay, Eden, summiting Mt. Kosciuszko before finishing at Charlotte Pass. Another high on the list, an enormous personal challenge; in 2018 was the 800km Hands Across the Water route from Bangkok to Khao Lak, which Greg had done previously on a bike. This time, he’d do it on foot, despite the offer of several good bikes!. If anyone could do it, it would be him; a man with such a low resting heart rate, that when in hospital on one occasion the cardiac team were called in, alarmed he was experiencing some sort of cardiac episode.
It’s more than just running
Greg’s favourite part about running is that you learn a lot about yourself, especially running at night, in the forest, on a single track, in the rain, when it’s cold, and then there’s the serenity - it just doesn’t get any better than that! When you haven’t seen anyone for 5 km, and you’re unlikely to for another 10km, there’s plenty of time to get existential.
There’s a lot of great upfront lessons from an ultra running life - about discipline, effort, enjoying the journey and pushing through when you want to give up. Greg’s now helping others achieve their goals from the lessons he’s learned on the track, as an executive in business and in the boardroom. If you want to go beyond 42.195km, find out what you’re capable of and experience a whole new world, Greg’s your man.
